The 'Stranded in Orstralia' comp CS I've been working on is taking much longer than expected (no surprises). So here's two tracks from it. DEBBIE DOWNERS. This is the only recording the band has so far but a demo will be out later on HSR. Short, fast and choppy 80s DIY inspired punk along the same lines as Kleenex/Liliput, Petticoats etc.

Internatoinal release through Deranged Records

After a few full length records, a few EPs, and a US tour in 2016, Perth's Helta Skelta have recently taken some time out. However, they're now back with a new 3 song 7" EP. Here, Helta Skelta change things up yet again, never one to let things dull. This 7” sees the band head into sparser territory, favouring the British and US over the Australian sounds. A much more art rock and post-punk outing this time round whilst still holding on to those aspects of 70s garage punk from previous efforts. A good comparison would be some Wire inspired jams that had been churned out with Eddy Current or John Cooper Clarke in mind.

"There’s a weird one-off episode of Only Fools And Horses set in Florida, and a running side-joke is that Americans can’t tell the difference between a cockney and aussie accent, constantly confusing the two. It always comes to mind when I think of Helta Skelta. Given that Jon’s accent floats somewhere between them like a trans-hemispheric version of the “mid-atlantic” twang, and that the tune itself plays out like a mix of Eddy Current and Blur’s “Parklife”, filled with Sleaford Mods (millennial John Cooper Clarke)-esque stream of consciousness wordplay and compounded colloquialisms from both sides of the equation, the comparison grows only more apt. Stylistically, the band has been leaning towards a sparser, more minimal post-punk vibe for a while, and this single is the clearest expression yet of this trajectory. Red Red Krovvy are an East Coast band comprising members originally from the regional and sunburnt city of Cairns but now situated across the metro of Sydney and Melbourne (A move that seemingly would not facilitate the productivity of the band, but, yet, here we are).
This time round RRK have taken the step up and present their debut LP. They’ve polished themselves up a bit. Each track still seethes with the same sardonic aggression of their previous output, a few 7” EPs and various cassette tapes, but this long player represents more of a conceptual and cohesive whole.
At its least this is female fronted, 70s sounding punk-thud that could easily have fit on the Aussie Murder Punk compilations. Equal parts Suicide Squad and Victims. At its most this is a record that perfectly sums up living in Australia in 2017. It is a reprieve from the daily struggle, of the mediocrity, anxiety, exhaustion and uncertainty that characterise our modern world.
Red Red Krovvy are kind of raw and primal, but without falling into the trap of sounding too much like any one particular era or band that they sound overly retro. They sound so straightforwardly punk that there's really not another word you need to attach to it. The riffs are really simple and straightforward, but it's just mega catchy and mean.
